I was excited to be invited to Budapest, Hungary to design season 2 of Netflix’s young-adult series. The show is based on the best-selling series of books by Leigh Bardugo, and set in her delightfully expansive fantasy “Grishaverse”. This magical Grishaverse is a wonderful place to play. Season 2 required me to reimagine and rebuild areas from the first season (like Ketterdam and Ravka), and to create Shu Han, Novy Zem, The Spinning Wheel, Kirigan’s Hideout, the Sea Whip Lair, the Dregs club, Hellgate and many other evocative locales from the Grishaverse.

A pandemic-related, science fiction, time-travel show - what could be more prescient! I was delighted to have the opportunity to design all four seasons of this SyFy show in Toronto, Canada (and other international locales). Based loosely on the 1995 film, the show allowed me to design sequences in multiple time periods and world-wide locations - from medieval, thru Nazi occupied France to the present day. The massive, gloomy, underground time machine facility was a highlight of the show. It was a great fun ride.

The show centers on KGB agents living secretly as a family in suburban Washington, and the efforts of the FBI to uncover and neutralize them. The Cold War look-and-feel of Washington in the 1980’s was one of this FX show’s main characters. I enjoyed designing the subtly different suburban homes for the two families - one all-American FBI, and one quasi-American KGB. The striking brutalist FBI headquarters and the traditional turn-of-the century Russian Embassy sets were other highlights of this show.

Based on real FBI cases, and set in the FBI’s New York office, this Dick Wolf show for CBS has an elaborate pilot featuring a huge explosion, it’s aftermath and subsequent investigation. The series features extensive office sets imagined as high over New York - I like the idea that the agents are above-the-fray in the office, but have to gird their loins and go down and fight it out on the mean streets of NYC. I’m glad they’re there 24/7.

Here is a selection of some of the varied shows I have designed in my career, including the Art Director’s Award Nominated “Moments In Time”, the pilot of the “MacGyver” re-boot, the TV series “Jericho”, and the Sundance Award winner “The Sessions”.
